Hannah Miller, a recent orphan has fallen prey to hard times.  With taxes due on her father’s farm, she realizes that she might lose everything.  She holds no other choice but to do the unthinkable.  Despite the townsfolk’s overwhelming objections, she purchases the bond of a hardened criminal and places her trust in a mysterious and wild looking Scotsman.  She makes him a compromise, promising to reduce the length of his servitude if he aids her before the financial deadline.  She soon learns that the murderer deemed a worthless criminal is now worth more to her than the steepest weight of gold.
